Giulio Celandroni Orchidee

The Miltonia genus includes about 20 species, divided into two different orchid families: Miltonia from Brazil and Miltoniopsis from Colombia and Peru; in addition to these, the Miltonia genus also includes hundreds of hybrids, both natural and artificial. Miltoniopsis have large, fragrant, brightly colored flowers, similar to very large pansies; Miltonia, on the other hand, generally have star-shaped flowers, greenish in color, with brown or purple spots. Narrow, long, thin leaves of a beautiful light green color extend from the pseudobulbs.

In spring and autumn, a long stem sprouts from new pseudobulbs, on which numerous flowers of great aesthetic impact bloom, splendid for making your home or garden an exclusive and welcoming place.

Miltonia Classification, Origins and Description

The Miltonia genus (belonging to the Orchidaceae family) includes approximately 25 species (including some hybrids), all originating from Latin America. Their natural habitat is the cool highlands of the Andes, bordering Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia, at altitudes ranging from 300 to 2500 m, where they grow clinging to treetops.

They have lanceolate leaves that sprout directly from the pear-shaped pseudobulbs at the base.

In nature, flowering is almost always in spring: the stem emerges from the leaf axil and can bear 3 to 10 very large, colorful, and extremely fragrant flowers.

Exposure:

Both types prefer not-too-bright exposures. The ideal would be to place them near a window facing West or, at the very least, East. The light must always be filtered, especially from mid-spring to the end of September: it is advisable to place a thick, light-colored curtain in front of the glass.

An easy method to monitor the correctness of our placement is to observe the color of the leaves. Healthy plants have a beautiful, vibrant light green; if it becomes too dark, it's because we have chosen too dark a position; conversely, too much sun causes localized scorching.

Miltonias need bright positions, but away from direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burns; usually, if the leaves tend to become very dark green, try to place them in a brighter place; if they tend to yellow, move the plant to a slightly more shaded area.

In summer, they can be placed in the garden or on the house terrace, in a shaded outdoor location, possibly at the base of trees or shrubs, so that they enjoy the shade and are simultaneously protected from winds and possible storms. The ideal growing temperature for miltonias is around 18-20°C, while miltoniopsis can withstand slightly lower temperatures without problems.

Climate

Both adapt with difficulty to life indoors or in apartments: to thrive, they would need specific environments where it is possible to regulate environmental temperature and humidity, with good variations between day and night, especially in summer.

In winter, miltonia requires temperatures between 10 and 12°C (minimally heated rooms are fine indoors); in summer, the thermometer should read about 25°C during the day, dropping to 16-18°C at night (for example, a bedroom with air conditioning).

Miltoniopsis in winter requires temperatures from 8° to 12°C: in summer, an ideal room has about 20°C during the day and 15°C at night.

Humidity and ventilation

A very important factor for the health of our orchids is the ambient humidity level. In this case, it is important that it never drops below 65%. At home, unfortunately, this is not an easy goal to achieve, but electric nebulizers and frequent manual misting can be a great help. Saucers filled with expanded clay and water placed near our pot are also useful. Let's remember that environmental humidity must increase proportionally with temperatures.

Good ventilation is also important to prevent the onset of fungal diseases: keep the pots outdoors as much as possible, compatible with temperatures. Otherwise, change the air frequently, but absolutely avoid cold drafts, which cause sudden wilting and abortion of stems and buds.

Watering and irrigation

Miltonias need a lot of water, preferably supplied frequently, but avoiding water stagnation which could damage the very thin and delicate roots of our orchid. Remember to water these orchids at least twice a week, throughout the year, never letting the compost dry out, and increasing the frequency of watering when necessary. If watering is too scarce, the leaves may curl; in this case, it is necessary to water the plant as soon as possible, which will produce new leaves, letting the old ones dry.

Provide specific orchid fertilizer at least once a month.

The roots must always be in a moist, but never soggy, substrate. The frequency of administration depends on the temperatures and the type of soil. Generally, it is done once a week, preferably in the morning. We can pour water from above or leave the pot submerged for about half an hour. In any case, we must then let it drain very well. Always avoid wetting the leaf axil where rot is most likely to occur.

Specimens kept on rafts (clinging to pieces of bark) require more frequent interventions, using sprayers. For all purposes, always use demineralized, osmotic, or, at best, rainwater.

Miltonia Cultivation

Miltonia and Miltoniopsis orchids have slightly different needs. The former can be classified as temperate greenhouse plants (and are therefore more delicate and demanding); the latter, however, thrive excellently in a cold greenhouse and are much more tolerant. We will look specifically at the various aspects to consider.

Soil and Fertilization

For the soil, use a specific orchid compost, consisting of loose material such as bark or osmunda fiber. These orchids need to be repotted at least once a year, after flowering, without necessarily increasing the pot size.

During the vegetative period, they require good support: it is essential to use a specific orchid fertilizer with balanced macronutrients: NPK 20-20-20. We can administer it once a month at full dose or every 15 days by halving it. Make sure the roots are well wet before proceeding: we will avoid dangerous burns. In winter, it is advisable to suspend administrations for about 2 months.

Propagation

In autumn or early spring, it is possible to propagate our plant by dividing the clumps of pseudobulbs, taking care to keep some leaves and some vigorous roots for each portion created. The new plants should be immediately planted in individual containers to ensure better growth of the new seedlings.

Repotting

Generally, these plants are available commercially during their natural flowering period.

Repotting should preferably be done in early spring, every year.

This will allow the roots to have space to expand and good air circulation, essential to prevent rot.

The ideal substrate is similar to that for phalaenopsis: small and medium-sized bark (pine bark) mixed with other materials such as plant fibers (coconut, palm). We can also add a little peat and sphagnum moss.
